Watch: Seahawks put Cardinals in early hole with 2 quick TDs

SEATTLE – After making a statement on the national stage last week, the Seattle Seahawks kept their momentum rolling early against the Arizona Cardinals.

Seattle’s offense continued to showcase its explosiveness with a long TD pass on the opening drive, and the defense stepped up with a touchdown of its own to put Arizona in a two-score hole early.

When the dust settled, the Seahawks were up 14-0 before six minutes of game time had even elapsed on Sunday.

Quarterback Sam Darnold and wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba got it started for Seattle with yet another deep connection down the field.

On a first down from near midfield, Darnold faked a handoff, booted to his left and unloaded a high-arching deep ball for Smith-Njigba, who tracked down the throw between two defenders for a 43-yard TD strike to go up 7-0 at the 10:55 mark of the first quarter.

It was the fourth time this season the Seahawks scored a TD on their opening drive, which comes after they broke a streak 22 straight games without one during Week 2.

The TD grab brought Smith-Njigba, the NFL’s leading receiver, up to 999 yards on the year. He surpassed the 1,000-yard mark on Seattle’s next drive.

The Seahawks got their second TD thanks to second-year linebacker Tyrice Knight and veteran defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence.

Filling in for injured starter Ernest Jones IV, Knight laid a hard hit on Arizona quarterback Jacoby Brissett as he started his windup to throw, knocking the ball out for Lawrence to scoop up and run back 34 yards for a touchdown and 14-0 lead with 9:22 left in the first.

It was Lawrence’s second fumble return for a touchdown and third overall defensive TD in his career. The fumble recovery was also the first for Seattle’s defense this season. The Seahawks’ only other fumble recovery came on a special teams play in last week’s win over Washington.
