Three free agent edge rushers for Seahawks to target

The Seattle Seahawks addressed many of the positions they were expected to during last week’s NFL Draft, but they surprisingly didn’t add any edge rushers.

One big question remains for Seattle Seahawks after NFL Draft

The group was a strength for the Seahawks last season led by the quartet of Boye Mafe, Derick Hall, DeMarcus Lawrence and Uchenna Nwosu. However, Mafe signed with the Cincinnati Bengals in free agency, and there is uncertainty on the futures of the remaining three beyond this season.

Hall is heading into the final year of his rookie contract. Lawrence reportedly considered retiring after Seattle’s Super Bowl victory and will be 34 years when the 2026 season begins. And Nwosu has dealt with multiple injuries throughout his career and will be 30 by the end of 2026.

Seattle still has a chance to add another edge rusher to the mix for at least the upcoming season with a number veterans still available in free agency. On Monday, Seahawks Radio Network analyst and former NFL wide receiver Bryan Walters highlighted a trio of options he likes for the team, which includes a former Seahawk.

Walters’ top two options are Kyle Van Noy and ex-Seahawk Jadaveon Clowney, who both played for head coach Mike Macdonald in 2023 when he was defensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens.

“Not that you need some fancy system as an edge rusher. You kind of know what you’re going to do. Rush the quarterback, come off the edge,” Walters said during Seattle Sports’ Brock and Salk. “But Macdonald has some intricacies there that you have to be ready for as an edge.”

The 33-year-old Clowney had 12 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks in 13 games with the Dallas Cowboys last season. He ranked 17th among edge rushers with an 80.6 pass-rushing grade from Pro Football Focus.

When Clowney played in Macdonald’s defense in Baltimore, he matched his career high with 9.5 sacks and added nine tackles for loss in 17 games.

The former No. 1 overall spent the 2019 season in Seattle, totaling seven tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks and his only career interception over 13 contests.

The 35-year-old Van Noy had just four tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks in 15 games last year with Baltimore, but he’s also not far removed from posting career highs of 14 tackles for loss and 12.5 sacks during a Pro Bowl campaign in 2024.

In 14 games during his lone year in Macdonald’s scheme, Van Noy registered nine tackles for loss and 9.0 sacks, the latter being a career high at the time.

“Both can still do it,” Walters said. “When you look at Clowney last year, 8 1/2 sacks with the Cowboys. I think that might be my number one, and then two would be Kyle Van Noy. But again, both played in Macdonald’s system. I think that’s the biggest thing. Get guys you’re familiar with, guys that you know, guys you can trust.”

Walters’ third option was eight-time Pro Bowler Von Miller, who recently said he turned down a contract offer from the Seahawks last offseason.

The 37-year-old Miller been hampered by injuries since his prime years in the 2010s, but he put together a healthy and productive season with 9.0 sacks and six tackles for loss in 17 games with the Washington Commanders in 2025.

“He had 9.0 sacks last year with Washington, he played all 17 games, showed he can do it, showed he can do it without being injured,” Walters said.
