Thomas Rawls unlikely to play in Seahawks-Vikings preseason game, K.J. Wright expected back next week

RENTON – Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said running back Thomas Rawls is unlikely to play Friday night when Seattle hosts the Vikings in its second preseason game. Rawls hasn’t practice this week after suffering what Carroll described as a minor ankle sprain in the team’s preseason opener.

“He’s going to be fine with it,” Carroll said. “He’ll be raring to go next week. I think it’s the right thing to hold him back this week. Likely to happen.”

His absence will mean more work for Eddie Lacy, who’s competing with Rawls to be Seattle’s starting running back this season.

“You’re going to see Eddie Lacy and see a good dose of Eddie and C.J. (Prosise) and Chris (Carson) and Alex (Collins). You’re going to see all the guys. Mike Davis played really well last week, so all those guys will play and again we’re going to just keep accumulating reps as we evaluate those guys. With really high hopes. It’s a very competitive group. Hopefully we can get moving at the line of scrimmage so we can see those guys.”

Carroll said wide receivers Tyler Lockett and Paul Richardson will go through pregame warmups, implying that’s all they’ll do. Tight end Luke Willson won’t play Friday night but is expected to return to practice some time next week.

Carroll said he hopes linebacker K.J. Wright will return to practice by Monday and should be ready for the team’s third preseason game. Wright has been out of town this week receiving non-surgical treatment on his knee.

Carroll said it’s not the same treatment that receiver Sidney Rice received in 2013, when he went to Switzerland for a platelet-rich plasma injection for patellar tendinitis in his knee. But Carroll remained vague on what the treatment entails.

“We think he is going to be back for next week. He’s not injured,” Carroll said. “This is a process and a long-range thought that he was excited about for and so we advocated with him. He went for it and we are hoping it will be a good step for the rest of the season. He wasn’t hurt. He played last week and was fine. He could have played this week, but this was the time to do it and so we went for it. We are thinking he will be back in action next week in practice with no setbacks.”

Dewey McDonald has been working at weak-side linebacker in Wright’s absence.
