Seahawks place Nwosu on PUP list ahead of training camp

The Seattle Seahawks placed veteran edge rusher Uchenna Nwosu on the physically unable to perform list on Thursday as he continues to recover from offseason knee surgery.

The move comes ahead of next Wednesday’s first training camp practice.

Players on the PUP list can return at any time during training camp and the preseason. But if they remain on the PUP list after rosters are cut down to 53 players on Aug. 26, they must miss at least four games before being eligible to return.

Back in March, Seahawks general manager John Schneider hinted at the possibility of Nwosu opening the season on the PUP list.

“The doctors are excited, but it’s going to be pretty close (on) his recovery,” Schneider told Seattle Sports’ Wyman and Bob on The John Schneider Show. “Is he going to be a PUP player candidate? Or will we be there without (him) and we just ride it for a couple weeks?

“It’s way too early to tell, but what we know about Uchenna is he’s still a young man. That guy’s a dog. He’s nasty. He’s a leader. He’s all about the work. He’s awesome. He’s great for the defense.”

Nwosu, 28, racked up a career-high 9.5 sacks and 12 tackles for loss in his first season with the Seahawks in 2022.

Nwosu then signed a three-year, $45 million contract extension with Seattle in July 2023, but a trio of injuries limited him to just six games apiece each of the past two seasons. He missed 11 games in 2023 with a season-ending torn pectoral muscle, the first four games of 2024 with a sprained MCL and then another seven games last year with a quad strain.

Following the slew of injuries, Nwosu agreed to a reworked contract this offseason, according to Over The Cap. He reportedly agreed to a $6.99 million pay cut for 2025, which means he now has two years and $19.51 million left on his contract.
