Seahawks reverse practice squad moves, reportedly for generous reason

The Seattle Seahawks announced Wednesday they had completely reversed their practice squad moves from Tuesday, and there’s reportedly a generous reason for what otherwise would look like a curious about-face.

Seattle has re-signed rookie running back Damien Martinez, offensive tackle Amari Kight and cornerback Shemar Jean-Charles to the practice squad on Wednesday and released offensive guard Sataoa Laumea, defensive end Jalan Gaines and defensive tackle Anthony Campbell. This comes a day after it was Laumea, Gaines and Campbell signed with Martinez, Kight and Jean-Charles released.
According to ESPN Seahawks reporter Brady Henderson, the Seahawks’ maneuvering with the six players was done in order to get each of them a week of practice squad pay after they all spent training camp with the team. Per Henderson, practice squad players with two years or less of NFL service earn a minimum weekly salary of $13,000.
Martinez is the most notable of the re-signed players. Taken by Seattle in the seventh round of this year’s NFL Draft pick, he rushed for a combined 3,169 yards over his standout three-year college career at Oregon State and Miami. Martinez lost a battle with George Holani for the Seahawks’ third running back spot on the active roster behind Kenneth Walker III and Zach Charbonnet.
Laumea stands out among the players released Wednesday. Taken in the sixth round of the draft in 2024 by Seattle, he started the final six games of last season at right guard after Anthony Bradford went down with an injury.
The Seahawks open the 2025 NFL season at 1:05 p.m. Sunday against the NFC West rival San Francisco 49ers at Seattle’s Lumen Field. Radio coverage on Seattle Sports will begin at 10 a.m. with the pregame show.
