Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold is on the comeback trail.
Darnold will participate in practice Wednesday for the first time since suffering a glute injury on the first offensive series of the season on Sept. 9 against the New England Patriots.
Rost: Even at 2-0, Seahawks have 3 big questions on offense
“He’s not going to take every rep today and then we’ll kinda ramp it up as the week goes,” Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald said about Darnold.
Macdonald said he thinks the Seahawks will decide “at some point before Friday’s over” if Darnold will return to action this Sunday in a road game against the Washington Commanders.
“I don’t think we’d go into the weekend not knowing if he’s gonna play,” Macdonald said. “It’s on a good track right now, assuming today goes well.”
When is the right time for Sam Darnold to return?
The defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks are off to a 2-0 start with backup QB Drew Lock having played the majority of their offensive snaps. Lock has completed 35 of 48 pass attempts for 422 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions in Darnold’s place.
Darnold completed one pass on two attempts for 13 yards before suffering his injury in the season-opening win over the Patriots.
Last season, Darnold threw for 4,048 yards, 25 touchdowns and 14 interceptions on 67.7% passing while starting all 17 regular season games in his first year with Seattle. In the playoffs, he threw for 672 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions on 61.5% passing in three games to lead the Hawks to their second Super Bowl title in franchise history.
The Seahawks meet the Commanders at 10 a.m. Sunday, with Seahawks Radio Network coverage on Seattle Sports starting at 7 a.m. with the pregame show.
