Seahawks’ Sam Darnold did way better than 49ers rival in golf event

New Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold was busy competing this weekend – in a different sport.

Darnold took part in the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe in Nevada, and he had a respectable showing. Out of the 90 participants, Darnold finished in the dead middle, tying with comedian Nate Bargatze for 45th.

On the par 72 course, Darnold shot an 85 in each of the first two rounds Friday and Saturday, then an 86 in Sunday’s round 3. The event used a points scoring system, and Darnold finished with six points.

The American Century Championship was won by former NHL player Joe Pavelski, whose 73 points was nine more than second-place finisher John Smoltz, a Baseball Hall of Famer and current MLB on FOX analyst (and a regular Seattle Sports guest).

If you’re looking for good news about Darnold’s finish, he did way better than a star for an NFC West rival. San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle was 81st with a score of minus-34.

Other competitors in the event with Seattle ties include: former Seahawks wide receiver Jerry Rice (23rd place, 28 points); Seattle Sonics legend Ray Allen (tied 32nd, 21 points); Washington native and recently retired NHL player T.J. Oshie (tied 32nd, 21 points); and Bothell High School product and NBA All-Star star Zach LaVine (58th, minus-7 points).

Darnold was paired up in the tournament with his friend and fellow 2018 NFL Draft pick Josh Allen, the star QB of the Buffalo Bills. Allen, who tied for 34th with 20 points, and Darnold regularly attend golf events together.
