NFL insider sees Seahawks as trade suitor for Raiders’ Maxx Crosby

The Seattle Seahawks are now on a quest to repeat as Super Bowl champions. Could that quest drive them to make a blockbuster trade for perennial Pro Bowl defensive end Maxx Crosby?

Albert Breer, senior NFL reporter for Sports Illustrated’s The MMQB, sees both the Seahawks and the team they just beat for the championship as potential suitors on the trade market for the Raiders superstar.

“I think over a quarter of the league has already sort of sniffed around the possibility of could we make a trade for Maxx Crosby,” he said Monday on The Breer Report. “I do think there are teams out there, including the two that were in the Super Bowl, that would have an interest in looking in bringing in Maxx Crosby.”

Both the Seahawks and Patriots have defensive-minded head coaches who may covet Crosby, or vice versa.

At least in the case of the Seahawks, who have had John Schneider in place as general manager since 2010, there is a precedent of adding veteran players like Crosby when they believe they have a good shot at winning it all.

“The Seahawks, if you go back to the Legion of Boom era when they were in that championship window, they were very aggressive about going and getting veterans,” Breer pointed out. “They went and got (wide receiver and returner) Percy Harvin. They went and got (defensive end) Cliff Avril. They went and got (defensive lineman) Michael Bennett. They continued to try to enhance the team they had while they were in that window. It would be no surprise to see John Schneider make a move.”

Breer added that Crosby “would be a good fit in any defense, but Mike Macdonald’s defense in particular.”

If the Seahawks do decide to make a run at a trade for Crosby, expect the return to hurt a bit.

“The idea of adding Maxx Crosby would obviously be enticing to a lot of teams, and the Raiders could bring back a big haul,” Breer said.

Crosby, who will be 29 next season, made 10 sacks in 15 games last season, but the Raiders went 3-14 in their lone season with Pete Carroll as head coach. Crosby was placed on injured reserve ahead of the Raiders’ last two games and underwent knee surgery last month, but Breer spoke of Crosby having a strained relationship with the team that new Raiders coach Klint Kubiak, the former Seahawks OC, looked to repair shortly after being hired. That hasn’t stopped trade rumors from flying, especially with the Raiders still very much in rebuild mode coming off of four straight losing seasons and now onto their fourth head coach in that time period.
