Seahawks’ Steven Hauschka on his perfect start, kicking mindset

Steven Hauschka has made his last 16 field-goal attempts, but it’s not the longest he’s ever gone without a miss.

“Yeah, I’ve had plenty of (longer streaks), but a lot of it was probably in practice,” Hauschka told “Danny, Dave and Moore” on Monday.

Hauschka – who signed a three-year, $9.15 million contract last year – has hit all 14 of his attempts this season plus his last two in 2014. He nailed three field goals in Sunday’s loss to the Panthers, including one that bonked off the upright and through.

The most recent streak has helped push Hauschka up to fourth place on the list of the most accurate kickers in NFL history, with a career field-goal percentage of 86.66. Those rankings, however, are prone to fluctuation, as one or two bad kicks can change them significantly.

Hauschka, who’s in his eight season in the NFL and his fifth with Seattle, originally planned to be dentist and acknowledged that he was a “totally accidental” football player, falling into the sport after being cut from his college soccer team. He eventually bounced around six different NFL squads before being claimed off waivers by the Seahawks in 2011. He called himself a perfectionist and a “man of details,” which has helped him break the art of kicking into a science.

“I don’t really look at numbers a whole lot,” Haushcka said. “The goal really is just to go attack each kick. Each kick is important in itself and so you just try and go to hit that one the best you can and then you leave it and move on to the next one, whether good or bad. And I know it sounds stupid, but that’s the way it works. Because you can’t focus on two kicks while you’re trying to kick one.”
