Seahawks’ Ernest Jones IV named NFC Defensive Player of the Week

A Seattle Seahawks player has been named NFC Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season.

After his two-interception game against the Minnesota Vikings, which included a pick-six, linebacker Ernest Jones IV took home defensive player of the week honors for Week 13 on Wednesday.

Jones delivered an all-around performance in Seattle’s 26-0 victory. The fifth-year pro added a team-high 12 tackles and two passed defended to his two interceptions.

Jones’ first interception helped set the tone for a matchup the Seahawks’ defense dominated.

While trying to avoid a sack from DeMarcus Lawrence late in the second quarter, Vikings quarterback Max Brosmer uncorked a wild underhand toss that went into the arms of Jones, who proceeded to go untouched on an 85-yard sprint to the end zone for a 10-0 lead. The interception came after Seattle turned the ball over on a Sam Darnold fumble at their own 13-yard line.

Jones’ second interception came early in the fourth quarter when Josh Jobe broke up a pass intended for Vikings star receiver Justin Jefferson.

Sunday’s outing was Jones’ first with two interceptions over 73 career games. He is now tied for second in the NFL with a team-high five interceptions on the season, which matches his career total over his first four campaigns.

Jones joins Lawrence as Seahawks to win NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors this year. Lawrence won the award after returning two fumbles for TDs in Seattle’s 44-22 win over Arizona in Week 10.

This is the first time Jones has won player of the week honors during his career.

The 9-3 Seahawks are tied for first place in the NFC West with the Los Angeles Rams, who won the first of two matchups between the teams this season.
