Report: Seahawks give veteran permission to seek trade

The Rayshawn Jenkins era may be done after only one season for the Seattle Seahawks.

The Seahawks have granted the safety permission to seek a trade, Fox Sports NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported Thursday afternoon.

The 31-year-old Jenkins, an eighth-year pro, has one year left on a two-year, $12 million contract he signed with the Seahawks last offseason.

A University of Miami product, Jenkins was brought in to be a starter alongside Julian Love, but lost his starting job to Coby Bryant after going on injured reserve with a hand injury following Seattle’s Week 6 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

After falling behind Bryant on the depth chart, Jenkins was primarily used as the third safety when Seattle’s defense went to three-safety packages.

In 13 games (nine starts), Jenkins totaled 53 tackles, two tackles for loss, a career-high two sacks and a 102-yard fumble return for a touchdown. Jenkins’ lengthy return in Seattle’s disappointing Week 5 loss to the New York Giants was the longest touchdown return in Seahawks history.

Jenkins ranked 87th out of 98 qualified safeties last season, according to Pro Football Focus. His 52.5 overall grade was a career worst and his 19.3% missed tackle rate was the second highest among Seahawks defenders with at least 200 defensive snaps played.

Jenkins, who is also a candidate to be a salary cap casualty if he is not traded, has a base salary of $4.89 million with no guaranteed money in 2025. The Seahawks could save $5.28 million of his $7.78 million cap hit next season if he’s released before June 1, according to OverTheCap.

The former fourth-round pick spent four seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers and three with the Jacksonville Jaguars before joining the Seahawks. In eight total NFL seasons, Jenkins has 517 tackles, 33 passes defended, 20 tackles for loss, 10 interceptions, 5.5 sacks and three forced fumbles.
