It doesn’t appear the Seattle Seahawks’ defense will get to face superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes in Friday night’s preseason game at Lumen Field.
With Knight out, is Seahawks’ linebacker depth a concern?
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Wednesday “there’s a good chance” Mahomes won’t play in the game, according to ESPN Chiefs reporter Nate Taylor.
That means former WSU Cougars standout Gardner Minshew could get the start instead.
Minshew, who became a cult hero on the Palouse during his sensational 2018 season at WSU, signed with Kansas City this offseason to be Mahomes’ backup.
Mahomes played three snaps in the Chiefs’ preseason opener last week, tossing a 1-yard touchdown on his lone passing attempt. Minshew took over after and played the next two series, completing 6 of 9 passes for 54 yards and rushing for a 2-yard TD.
Minshew, 29, is heading into his seventh NFL season and is playing for his fifth different team. Over his NFL career, he is 17-29 as a starter and has a 63.3% completion rate with 68 touchdown passes and 34 interceptions. He spent last season with the Las Vegas Raiders, where he threw for 2,013 yards with nine TD passes and 10 picks.
Minshew transferred to WSU prior to the 2018 season and had a breakout campaign, earning Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year honors and finishing fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting. He was a sixth-round draft pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars the following spring.
