Macdonald hints Seahawks could still look to add veteran CB

Jun 12, 2025, 10:55 AM

At this stage of the offseason, one of the lingering questions for the Seattle Seahawks is whether they will add a veteran cornerback to compete with Josh Jobe for the third corner spot behind Devon Witherspoon and Riq Woolen.

What Macdonald said about Seahawks’ O-line position battles

Jobe, a fourth-year pro and former practice squad player for Seattle, took over the third corner role from Tre Brown midway through last season. With Brown having signed with the San Francisco 49ers in free agency, Jobe remains the internal favorite to win the role.

During recent OTA and minicamp practices open to the media, Jobe consistently manned the third corner spot and appeared to play well. In back-to-back days last week, he intercepted a pass from Sam Darnold in the end zone and had a nice breakup of a deep sideline pass that was intended for Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

Other players who could be in the mix for the third corner spot or to be additional cornerback depth are veteran free agent addition Shemar Jean-Charles and 2024 fifth-round pick Nehemiah Pritchett.

But the Seahawks have also shown an interest in addition a veteran to the group.

Last month, the team reportedly hosted free agent visits for Rasul Douglas and one-time Pro Bowler Shaquill Griffin, who have 28 career interceptions between them. And earlier this week, the Green Bay Packers released two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander, which adds another accomplished veteran corner to the market.

After Wednesday’s minicamp practice, Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald was asked about the cornerback spots behind Witherspoon and Woolen. Macdonald said there are “great battles” for those roles, but hinted that the team could still make a signing in free agency.

“These are great battles going into the offseason,” Macdonald said. “Now, I mean, are we not going to look to always improve our team in any aspect? No, we’re always going to be out there and try to be in everything and chasing edges on making us better.

“But the guys that are with us right now kind of in that three, four, five spot is exciting. The guys are doing a great job, but go nail it this summer and come back and go compete your butt off.”
