Instant Reaction: Seahawks trade ‘bigger move than people realize’

The Seattle Seahawks have reportedly made a splash before Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline, acquiring fourth-year wide receiver and one-time All-Pro returner Rashid Shaheed from the New Orleans Saints.

Seattle Sports was on the air reacting in real time to the move, first with Brock and Salk, followed quickly by Bump and Stacy.

Here’s a look at what a pair of football analysts and former NFL players, Michael Bumpus and Brock Huard, said after hearing the news.

Michael Bumpus

Bumpus, who was a receiver himself with the Seahawks, made sure to point out that even if Shaheed isn’t a well-known name, the trade by the 6-2 Hawks is certainly a notable one.

“This is a bigger move than I think people realize,” Bumpus said. “When they talk about being aggressive, this is it, because your offense becomes that much more explosive, your kick return game becomes that much more explosive.

“I really like this move. John Schneider, big ups.”

Bumpus added an anecdote about Schneider, Seattle’s president of football operations and longtime general manager.

“You know what’s funny? I actually texted (Schneider) this morning,” Bumpus said. “He typically returns my texts – he didn’t return it. My man was dealing.”

Brock Huard

First, Huard mentioned the connection between Shaheed and first-year Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, who was with Shaheed in New Orleans last year as the Saint’s OC.

“Language-wise, he was in this language a year ago, so it’s not like he’s coming in having to learn a foreign language,” Huard said.

Then Huard relayed a text message he received right after the trade from NFL Network and NFL.com analyst Daniel Jeremiah, a regular guest on Brock and Salk who had just been on the show about an hour earlier.

“Speed. Big-play guy. Doesn’t need volume to impact game,” read Jeremiah’s text.

Huard said that last part is especially important as Shaheed is set to join a Seahawks offense led by quarterback Sam Darnold that is leaning heavily on the NFL’s leading receiver, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who is on pace to break the league’s single-season receiving yards record.

“That’s a key point right there… because he’s not gonna get volume,” Huard said of Shaheed. “But… if you get three or four (targets per game), can one of those be a home run? And that answer is yes with this guy.”

The move also keeps the wide receiver position stocked while Seattle deals with injuries to Cooper Kupp, Jake Bobo and Dareke Young.

“You make sure you take care of that position and give Sam, who has been so on target and on time, a guy who can create space himself.”
