Former Seahawks safety Rayshawn Jenkins lands team in free agency

Strong safety Rayshawn Jenkins, who the Seattle Seahawks released ahead of the free agency period, is headed to the Cleveland Browns.

Former Seattle Seahawks safety Rayshawn Jenkins has found a landing spot in free agency.

Jenkins is joining the Cleveland Browns, the team announced Monday. The news was first reported by Mary Kay Cabot of The Plain Dealer in Cleveland, who added that he recently visited the Browns.

The 31-year-old Jenkins signed with the Seahawks early in the 2024 offseason on a two-year, $12 million contract. He played 13 games for Seattle last season at strong safety including nine starts, making 53 tackles and a career-high two sacks.

Jenkins had one of the biggest highlights of the season for the Seahawks, returning a fumble a franchise-record 102 yards for a touchdown in Week 5 against the New York Giants.

While Jenkins signed with Seattle to start at safety with Julian Love, he went on injured reserve with a hand injury following a Week 6 loss to San Francisco and fell behind Coby Bryant on the depth chart upon his return.

Jenkins ranked 87th out of 98 qualified safeties last season by Pro Football Focus. His 52.5 overall grade was a career worst and his 19.3% missed tackle rate was the second highest among Seahawks defenders with at least 200 defensive snaps played.

The Seahawks reportedly granted Jenkins permission to seek a trade in February, as he had a base salary of $4.89 million with no guaranteed money for 2025. He was released shortly after, saving Seattle $5.28 million of his $7.78 million cap next season, according to OverTheCap.

A fourth-round pick by the Chargers in 2017 out of Miami, Jenkins played four seasons in Los Angeles and then three with the Jacksonville Jaguars before coming to Seattle. In his eight NFL seasons, he has 517 tackles, 33 passes defended, 20 tackles for loss, 10 interceptions, 5.5 sacks and three forced fumbles.
