Is WA native Cooper Kupp now a fit as Seahawks WR?

The Seattle Seahawks’ offensive roster has been turned upside down and inside out in the past week. As a result, could a local product and former NFL Offensive Player of the Year now make sense for offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak’s system?

It’s been known for a while that Yakima native and former Eastern Washington Eagles standout Cooper Kupp’s time with the Los Angeles Rams is coming to an end, as the 31-year-old wide receiver announced last month that he had been told the Rams intend to trade him.

No trade has since materialized, and according to a new report Monday by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Rams are now prepared to release him at the start of the new NFL league year Wednesday if no team swoops in and takes his contract – with two remaining years and high salary cap hits – off their hands.

The Seahawks have reportedly found their replacement for quarterback Geno Smith in Sam Darnold, but they have not added a wide receiver since releasing Tyler Lockett last week and reportedly trading DK Metcalf on Sunday to Pittsburgh.

Suddenly, Kupp on a short-term deal sounds like an interesting option for the Seahawks to pursue.

Cooper — and we cannot stress this enough — Kupp.

Asked Monday on Seattle Sports’ Brock and Salk if the Seahawks could take a look at Kupp, former NFL quarterback and current FOX football analyst Brock Huard said he thinks it’s a possibility.

“He’d be a great fit in this scheme,” Huard responded. “Just all the elements that you use as a blocker. All the elements you use in play-action.”

Huard added that Kupp brings some of the same things to the table that Lockett did as a savvy veteran, but also mentioned that “Father Time jumped on his back in a big way.”

Who is Cooper Kupp in 2025?

There’s a big question about how much Kupp has left in the tank. The Davis High School alum was hampered by an ankle injury in 2024 and limited to 12 games, and he hasn’t played more than 12 games in a season since his incredible 2021 campaign when he led the NFL with 1,947 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns, and won Super Bowl MVP honors in the Rams’ championship victory.

Kupp is still productive when on the field, however. He had 710 yards and six touchdowns on 67 receptions (100 targets) last season, averaging 10.6 yards per carry and 59.2 yards per game. Those numbers were all down from 2024 but were solid – just not at the salary he was earning.

That wouldn’t be a problem for the Seahawks should Kupp be released, though, as is now expected. So yes, Kupp is definitely a name worth following for Seattle in free agency.
