Bruce Irvin compares Seahawks’ lack of sacks to a cheating spouse

Some people take mediocrity hard. Then there’s Bruce Irvin’s description of the pain that stems from the Seahawks lack of sack production so far this season.

“It feels terrible, bro,” Irvin said Wednesday on 710 ESPN Seattle’s “Danny, Dave and Moore.” “It’s like your wife cheating on you or something. It’s terrible.”

Irvin, who has transitioned from a defensive lineman to an outside linebacker and is in a contract year, has 1.5 of the Seahawks’ six total sacks through the first four games. The lack of QB pressure, coupled with the team’s equally surprising zero interceptions, may seem like a problem. However, since the return of safety Kam Chancellor, Seattle’s hulking defense has not allowed a touchdown in eight quarters.

“We’re not there yet, but we’re almost there,” Irvin said.

Irvin said Lions QB Matthew Stafford used quick drops to keep Seattle’s rush at bay on Monday.

“We feel like we can rush with anybody, we feel we can rush against any O-line in this league,” he said. “I think Stafford did a great job of getting the ball out. I think the average he held was like 1.9 seconds, something like that. He was aware that we were pretty good rushers and he did a great job of just getting the ball out and getting it to the receivers as fast as he could.”

Irvin, who played through a sprained ankle against the Lions, graded his own play as a B-plus to start the season, saying he feels he’s finding consistency each week and that the game “is really slowing down to me.”

The 27 year old is also playing more under control, as seen when he was the recipient of a personal foul penalty after being mugged by a pair of Detroit offensive linemen.

“I didn’t even say nothing,” he said. “Old Bruce probably would have retaliated, but I knew the situation and I just let it go.”

Irvin expects a challenge with the balanced Cincinnati Bengals offense and stout offensive line on Sunday.

“I heard they don’t give up a lot of sacks though, either, but that’s going to change, hopefully,” he said. “We gotta play good football this weekend or we’ll have a long plane ride home.”
