On two separate occasions this week, head coach Mike Macdonald expressed a hint of excitement when asked about the Seattle Seahawks’ success on screen passes early this season.

“The screen game – how about that?” Macdonald said.
“I just can’t remember being on a team with a great screen game, so I’m excited to be a part of it,” he added.
Many Seahawks fans probably share a similar sentiment.
Through four weeks, the Seahawks have attempted 13 screen passes for 138 yards and a touchdown, according to FTN Fantasy. On screen passes, they rank No. 1 in the NFL in EPA per dropback and No. 2 in yards per attempt at 10.6.
It’s a sharp contrast from the past 10 to 15 years of Seahawks football, which rarely featured much consistency or effectiveness in the screen game.
“It’s another example of like, hey, we just shift our focus to where we want to get better, and guys make it come to life,” Macdonald said. “The linemen have done a great job of hitting their targets out on the perimeter and in the alley, and our runners have been more decisive once they get the ball.”

Most notably, running back Emanuel Wilson took a screen pass for a 23-yard touchdown in the first quarter of Seattle’s win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. Wilson also gained 13 yards on a screen pass later in the game.
And the week prior, AJ Barner gained 32 yards and 15 yards on a pair of tight end screens against the Washington Commanders.
But Macdonald said the Seahawks won’t rest on their laurels.
“We’ve had good returns, but it doesn’t mean we stop working on it,” Macdonald said. “We just keep hammering away. But it’s great to have that asset of our offense, because it’s tough to defend.”
