Reports: WSU Cougars hiring ex-Oregon St. head coach as DC

The WSU Cougars are hiring former Oregon State head coach and Pullman High School alum Trent Bray as their defensive coordinator, according to The Oregonian’s Ryan Clarke and multiple other reports.

Bray, 43, is the first reported addition to new WSU head coach Kirby Moore’s coaching staff. Moore was hired as the Cougars’ head coach on Dec. 12 to replace Jimmy Rogers, who left Pullman after one season to become the head coach at Iowa State.

Bray was fired by Oregon State in mid-October after an 0-7 start. He went 5-7 in his first year as the Beavers’ head coach in 2024.

Bray spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons as Oregon State’s defensive coordinator. The Beavers ranked 16th out of 131 FBS teams in scoring defense in 2022 and 47th out of 133 FBS teams in 2023.

Prior to that, Bray spent more than a decade as a linebackers coach at Oregon State, Nebraska and Arizona State.

Bray was a standout linebacker at Oregon State, where he was a first-team All-Pac-12 selection as a senior in 2005.
