UW Huskies inch closer to top 25 in latest AP college football poll

The UW Huskies are in striking distance of the top 25, coming in as the third team outside of the list in the voting for the new Associated Press college football poll that was released Sunday morning.

The Huskies improved to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in Big Ten play this season with their 38-19 victory at home over Rutgers on Friday night.

Quarterback Demond Williams Jr. had a career night for UW, throwing for 402 yards and two touchdowns and running for 136 yards and two touchdowns against the Scarlet Knights.

UW received 36 points in Sunday’s poll. A pair of Big Ten rivals, Illinois (113 points) and Michigan (73), are between the Huskies and the top 25. Michigan (4-2 overall, 2-1 Big Ten) is the Huskies’ next opponent in a 9 a.m. game at The Big House next Saturday. It will be broadcast on national television on FOX.

The Oregon Ducks slipped five spots to No. 8 in Sunday’s AP poll following a 30-20 loss to Indiana, who rose three spots to No. 3. Yet another Big Ten team, the defending champion Ohio State Buckeyes, remain at No. 1 after beating Illinois 34-16.

The Big Ten’s five teams in the top 25 ranks second in the country, but is half of the 10 teams the SEC has in the poll.

Ole Miss dropped a spot to No. 5 after just barely surviving Saturday against the WSU Cougars.
