Former UW Huskies 1st-round pick abruptly retires from NFL

Former UW Huskies standout and Renton native Joe Tryon-Shoyinka is retiring from the NFL at age 27.

Tryon-Shoyinka, a 2021 first-round draft pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was placed on the reserve/retired list by the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday. He signed a one-year deal with Philadelphia in late March, but reportedly was absent from the Eagles’ organized team activities and mandatory minicamp this spring.

Tryon-Shoyinka had a productive four seasons in Tampa Bay. He totaled 15 sacks and 21 tackles for loss, while making 45 starts and appearing in 66 games for the Buccaneers.

Tryon-Shoyinka then spent the first half of the 2025 season with the Cleveland Browns before he was traded to the Chicago Bears last November. He appeared in 16 games last season but played sparingly for both teams, finishing with no sacks and only one tackle for loss.

A graduate of Hazen High School in Renton, Tryon-Shoyinka spent three seasons at UW. He was a second-team All-Pac-12 selection as a redshirt sophomore in 2019, when he recorded eight sacks and 13 tackles for loss.
