The Apple Cup trophy has returned to Montlake after the UW Huskies trounced the rival WSU Cougars 59-24 at Pullman’s Martin Stadium on Saturday.

What stood out from UW Huskies’ runaway Apple Cup win over WSU

Longtime college football analyst and former UW quarterback Brock Huard shared his thoughts on the game during Monday’s edition of Brock and Salk on Seattle Sports, and he had a top takeaway for both the Dawgs and Cougs.

Here’s a look at what Huard had to say during the daily Blue 88 segment.

Brock’s top UW Huskies takeaway from the Apple Cup

While Huard wasn’t so high on what the Huskies did on defense, which he said “still has some challenges,” he was impressed by what quarterback Demond Williams Jr., running back Jonah Coleman and the rest of UW’s offense accomplished on Saturday.

“What Demond Williams did – 16-of-19 (passing), 300 yards, four touchdown passes – it looked like JV versus varsity,” Huard said. “His speed, his command, his control. Jonah had a couple more rushing touchdowns – he leads country in that (with nine), had (104) receiving yards and a touchdown.

“Just as good as you could possibly play offensively. You knew that was in them against a very, very depleted Wazzu defense. But just phenomenal stuff and sets the table for a Saturday afternoon game against the No. 1 team in the country (Ohio State) coming to Husky Stadium.”

The stage is now set for Washington’s huge Big Ten opener against the defending champion and top-ranked Buckeyes at home at 12:30 p.m. this Saturday.

Brock’s top WSU Cougars takeaway from the Apple Cup: The QB is decided

The Cougars had started redshirt sophomore Jaxon Potter in each of their first three games, but they switched to senior Zevi Eckhaus for the Apple Cup after Potter was benched in a disappointing loss the week before to North Texas.

In their first year under head coach Jimmy Rogers, it appeared the Cougars opened the season with Potter in the hopes he could gain valuable experience since he can remain with the program past this year. That’s not the case with Eckhaus, who had the most experience among WSU QBs entering the year after he quarterbacked in the Holiday Bowl last season.

According to Huard, Eckhaus showed he’s WSU’s best option at QB with his performance in the Apple Cup (25-of-36 passing for 277 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions).

“Wazzu found their quarterback,” Huard said. “Should have gone with Zevi Eckhaus from the start of this year – I know why they didn’t, they want to see if the younger guys can play and yada, yada, yada. He is by far the better option.”

WSU continues play at 4:30 p.m. this Saturday at Colorado State. Radio coverage will be available on the Seattle Sports app and 770 AM beginning at 2:30 with the pregame show.

Brock Huard answers three football questions at 7:45 a.m. on the Blue 88 segment during each edition of Brock and Salk. Catch Seattle Sports’ Brock and Salk live from 6-10 a.m. weekdays.

Financial tip for investors: Desmond Williams is currently +5000 to win the Heisman. That's a $1000 return on a $20 bet. Those odds will change dramatically if the Huskies pull the upset over Ohio State or at minimum Williams has a great game vs the Ohio State defense.
