Even with a loss in their most recent game, the UW Huskies did enough over a tough last week of competition to move up a spot in the new women’s basketball Top 25 poll from The Associated Press.

The Huskies are the new No. 24 team in Monday’s rankings, which came out just a day after they fell 75-66 at home to Illinois, ending a five-game win streak. UW had stacked up a pair of victories on the road in Big Ten play in the six days prior to Sunday’s loss, including an 83-80 victory oven then-No. 16 Maryland in double overtime last Wednesday.
Maryland dropped to No. 22 while Illinois was the sixth team outside of Monday’s Top 25.
Washington is 17-5 overall and 7-4 in Big Ten action with seven games left in the regular season, including a big test at home at 6 p.m. Thursday against No. 9 Ohio State.
In the men’s hoops rankings, the Gonzaga Bulldogs remained at No. 6 even after taking down rival Saint Mary’s 73-65 in Spokane on Saturday night, which was their only game of the week.
The Zags were able to get star forward Graham Ike back on the floor Saturday after playing the previous three games without him as he nursed an ankle injury. He shined in his return, leading Gonzaga with 30 points as it improved to 22-1 overall and 10-0 in WCC play. The Zags remain without Braden Huff, their other standout forward. Huff has a knee injury that is expected to keep him out of action for at least a couple more weeks if not until next month.
Gonzaga has eight games to go in the regular season, including two on the road coming up this week – Portland (10-14 overall, 3-8 WCC) at 7 p.m. Wednesday, and Oregon State (12-12, 5-6) at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Atop the men’s rankings, undefeated Arizona (22-0) remained No. 1 while Michigan (20-1) moved up to No. 2, trading places with UConn (21-1). Illinois (19-3) was the big mover, jumping four spots to No. 5.
In the women’s rankings, the top four was unchanged: UConn (23-0), UCLA (21-1), South Carolina (21-2) and Texas (21-2).
