Sounders notebook: West Ham in Seattle for friendly July 5

The Sounders will host English Premier League side West Ham United in a friendly on July 5 at CenturyLink Field, adding to an already packed summer league schedule.

The Sounders had a short week of practice leading up to Saturday’s road match against FC Dallas. The team is usually off Sunday and Tuesday the week after a Saturday home match, but on Monday the team paid a special visit to Joint Base Lewis-McChord ahead of Military Appreciation Night during their May 21 match against Colorado at CenturyLink Field.

Here are some other notes from the Sounders:

• It was announced this week that English Premier League side West Ham United will be playing a friendly against the Sounders on July 5 at CenturyLink. Some fans aren’t pleased, as the match is sandwiched into an already packed summer league schedule. But Seattle coach Sigi Schmid said that the players are looking forward to it, and that it will be a good chance to get some players some playing time that they might not get otherwise. West Ham’s roster might be slightly depleted post-European Championships, but fans can still expect to see some of the stars of one of the more entertaining English teams of 2016.

• Academy news isn’t always particularly noteworthy, but this goal by Connor Drought of the Sounders U14 team from last week is worth seeing. The goal was the first in the academy side’s 4-1 defeat of their opponent, Honduras’ Deportivo Victoria, in the Cayman Airways U15 Invitational.

• This Sunday is Steve Zakuani’s charity match at Starfire Stadium. You can get tickets here to see former Sounders play with and against the likes of Landon Donovan and Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson. Proceeds from the match go to Zakuani’s charity, Kingdom Hope.
