The Seattle Sounders just added yet another trophy to their collection.

And they did so by defeating likely the greatest soccer player of all time.

The Sounders pulled away for a 3-0 win over Messi-led Inter Miami in the Leagues Cup final on Sunday evening in front of 69,314 fans at Lumen Field.

Osaze De Rosario opened the scoring by heading in a cross from Alex Roldan in the 26th minute. Roldan then converted a penalty kick in the 84th minute and Paul Rothrock added an 89th-minute goal to seal the victory.

It’s the first time the Sounders have won the Leagues Cup, an annual tournament featuring teams from North America’s top two leagues – the MLS and Mexico’s Liga MX. This year’s tournament featured 36 teams, with 18 apiece from the two leagues.

By claiming the Leagues Cup, the Sounders became the only MLS team to win all five annual trophies available to the league. Seattle had already won two MLS Cups (2016, 2019), four U.S. Open Cups (2009, 2010, 2011, 2014), a CONCACAF Champions Cup (2022) and a Supporters’ Shield (2014).

The Sounders won all three of their matches in Phase 1 of the Leagues Cup, beating Cruz Azul 7-0, Santos Laguna 2-1 and Tijuana 2-1. Seattle then recorded shutouts in all three of its knockout matches, earning a penalty-kick triumph over Puebla in the quarterfinals and a 2-0 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy in the semifinals before defeating Inter Miami in the championship match.

Moments after the final whistle on Sunday evening, a post-match brawl broke out between the Sounders and Inter Miami. Videos posted on social media appeared to show Inter Miami’s Luis Suárez spitting on a Sounders staff member.
