The Seattle Sounders and longtime goalkeeper Stefan Frei have agreed to a new contract, according to a report by The Athletic’s Tom Bogert on Friday morning.
Frei, who turns 40 next April, was out of contract following the 2025 season. He will return for his 13th season with Seattle in 2026.
Frei has won two MLS Cups with the Sounders (2016, 2019), along with a Supporter’s Shield (2014), a U.S. Open Cup (2014) and a CONCACAF Champions Cup (2022). He’s the club’s all-time leader in matches played, with more than 400 appearances across all competitions.
Across 351 career MLS regular-season matches with Seattle, Frei has recorded 105 shutouts and 1.16 goals allowed per 90 minutes. This past season, Frei allowed 31 goals in 26 regular-season matches, while posting a 72.1% save percentage with eight shutouts.
Frei missed more than a month this past summer after suffering a concussion from a scary collision during a July 6 match. He returned to the net in August and was the Sounders’ primary starter the rest of the way, including for Seattle’s best-of-three opening-round MLS Cup playoff series against Minnesota United. He made seven saves and allowed five goals in the Sounders’ 2-1 series loss.
Frei began his MLS career in 2011 with Toronto FC, where he spent his first three seasons before being traded to Seattle.
