What They Said: Mariners not backing down after 2 losses in ALCS

The first two games of the ALCS went a lot better for the Seattle Mariners than the next two. As a result, the M’s are going into a Game 5 at 3:08 p.m. Friday against the Toronto Blue Jays that carries the utmost importance.

How are the Mariners themselves doing after dropping two straight at their home ballpark to fall into a 2-2 tie with the Blue Jays in the best-of-seven series with a spot in the World Series on the line?

The players were singing a tune of resilience after Thursday’s 8-2 loss in Game 4 at T-Mobile Park. Here is what three veteran members of the Mariners said.

Josh Naylor, 1B

“You just gotta come to the ballpark every day ready to play, ready to work hard and ready to have fun. It’s a kids game at the end of the day. I know it’s the postseason and crowds are a little bit louder, lights are a little bit brighter, moments are bigger, but at the end of the day it’s still baseball. You’ve still got to show up like it’s Game 1 or Game 15, Game 130. You just got to play baseball and kind of take certain scenarios out of it and just come to the ballpark ready to play, ready to have fun, ready to enjoy the big moments when you get them, learn from the mistakes when they happen.”

“We come in every day, watch the (game from the) day before and just come into that new day with the same expectations on winning the baseball game and working hard and preparing well. I guess enjoying the game too and kind of building everyone up before the game, during and after. This team is really resilient and I’m very blessed and fortunate enough to be here.”

Cal Raleigh, C

“We knew it wasn’t going to be easy, so it’s just about keeping a level head, understanding don’t get too high, don’t get too low, and understand now it’s a best of three. So go out tomorrow, forget it, flush it, and come back ready to go.”

“We fell behind (in Game 4 Thursday), gave up that big crooked number, and then let the starter get comfortable there. It’s kind of happened the past two nights, so we just gotta keep the pressure on. Even if there is a number given up, we have to keep the pressure on and play our game. We’ve just gotta (have) tough at-bats like we’d been doing the first two games.”

Jorge Polanco, 2B/DH

“We believe in each other here. We know what a special group we have. We support each other and we know we’ve been through tough times before. Like I said, we believe in each other and we’re gonna come back.”

Game 5 of the ALCS is scheduled for 3:08 p.m. Friday at T-Mobile Park. Radio coverage on Seattle Sports will begin at noon with an extended pregame show. The TV broadcast will be on FS1.
