Three standouts from Mariners’ Spring Breakout game

The future of the Seattle Mariners was on display when they faced the Milwaukee Brewers for their annual Spring Breakout game Friday afternoon in Phoenix.

All six of the Mariners’ prospects ranked in MLB Pipeline’s top 100 took the field, as did many of the others who make the organization’s top 30 farmhands, in a 7-3 loss to the Brewers.

Here’s a look at the Mariners’ highlights from the prospect showcase.

Sloan’s perfect day

If Friday was the last time we see right-hander Ryan Sloan take the mound this spring, he left a strong final impression.

The 6-foot-5 right-hander got the start and delivered three perfect innings, striking out three batters during an impressive 39-pitch outing.

Sloan’s day started off strong when he struck out third-ranked Brewers prospect Jett Williams swinging on a 96.5-mph sinker in the first at-bat of the bottom of the first inning. He fanned center fielder Luis Lara swinging at a 97.5-mph four-seamer above the zone to end the second and added another strikeout in the third when he got first baseman Brock Wilken to whiff on a well-placed 3-2 slider at the bottom of the zone on the outside corner.

Sloan, the third-ranked prospect in the Mariners’ organization and No. 33 in all of baseball, got six whiffs on 18 swings, per Baseball Savant. His four-seam fastball averaged 97.9 mph.

Montes shows off bat … and wheels

Outfielder Lazaro Montes is known for his power potential. His 32 home runs last season were tied for the third-most across all levels of the minor leagues. But it was Montes’ contact and speed that were on display during a 3 for 3 day at the plate Friday.

Montes started his day with a slow dribbler down the first base line that he legged out for an RBI single in the first inning. In his next at-bat in the second, he shot a soft line-drive single the other way and got himself in scoring position by stealing second base. And in his final at-bat in the fifth, Montes sent a well-struck single up the middle to drive in his second run of the game.

The 21-year-old Montes is Seattle’s fourth-ranked prospect and No. 43 league-wide.

The beast unleashed

Outfielder Yorger Bautista joined Montes as the only Mariners with multi-hit games, and they were very loud ones.

Bautista, whose nickname “La Bestia” translates to “The Beast,” crushed a cutter from Brewers right-hander Ryan Birchard over the wall and the grass beyond it in right field for a solo home run in the ninth inning that came off the bat at 109.1 mph. He also tripled to center field in the fourth on scorching line drive that left the bat at 110.2 mph.

The 18-year-old Bautista, who was the Mariners’ top international free agent signing last year, is the 10th-ranked prospect in the organization.
