Lineups: Ohtani held out by Dodgers in finale against Mariners

The Seattle Mariners won’t have to deal with pitching to (or around) Shohei Ohtani at least in the early stages of their rubber match against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday night.

Expectation growing that Mariners will trade Emerson Hancock

Ohtani, who has been dealing with left knee inflammation that has kept the two-way phenom from pitching since July 3, is getting the night off in the series finale at Dodgers Stadium.

Ohtani’s absence means former Mariners slugger Teoscar Hernández will be the designated hitter for Los Angeles and Enrique Hernández will get his first start since being activated off the injured list Tuesday as the left fielder.

Ohtani went 5 for 7 at the plate with a homer, two doubles, four RBIs and two walks in the first two games of the series.

As for the Mariners, their batting order looks a little different than it typically has against a right-hander with third baseman J.P. Crawford out of the lineup and center fielder Julio Rodríguez batting in the cleanup spot for the first time this year.

Crawford, who is out of the starting lineup for a second straight day, has been dealing with a sore left wrist since the end of Seattle’s first series out of the All-Star break, which caused him to miss four games last week. He was originally scheduled to be out of the lineup for Tuesday’s series opener in Los Angeles before being a late addition when shortstop Colt Emerson was scratched with back spasms. Crawford came in as a defensive replacement after Emerson was pinch-hit for in the eighth inning of Wednesday’s game.

With Crawford out, Weston Wilson is getting a rare start against a right-hander while batting eighth as the third baseman. It’s the first time he has started three straight games since being selected from Triple-A on June 19.
