All Mariners back from WBC, and Raleigh returns to lineup

The Seattle Mariners have been marked safe from the World Baseball Classic.

Every player the Mariners sent to the WBC have successfully returned, and it seems nobody is worse for wear after competing in the international tournament.

The best sign came with an update Thursday afternoon to the Mariners’ lineup for their 6:10 p.m. Cactus League game against the Athletics. While a new lineup after an original one has been posted is typically a bad sign, in this case it was the opposite, as a change was made to include All-Star catcher Cal Raleigh. In his first game back from playing for Team USA in the WBC, Raleigh is serving as the designated hitter and hitting second in the batting order.

With Raleigh playing Thursday, the Mariners shifted offseason signing Rob Refsnyder from DH to right field, Luke Raley was moved from right field to center, and Rhylan Thomas was scratched. With the batting order, Refsnyder was pushed down from second to third, and the rest of the lineup moved down a spot until No. 8, where Thomas was initially penciled in.

One player who has been back from the WBC but hasn’t been seen in action since is outfielder Dominic Canzone, who had a nice showing with the surprising Italy squad. Mariners insider Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports reported Thursday that Canzone was held out of play Wednesday due to an illness.

AL West Preview: Mariners projected to repeat as division champs

Another recent return to camp is relief pitcher Eduard Bazardo, who pitched scoreless outings for WBC champion Venezuela both in the semifinals Monday against Italy and the title game Tuesday against the USA.
