Mariners prospect Lazaro Montes makes 2 web gems in Tacoma

Lazaro Montes is most known for his big-time power at the plate. But on Wednesday night, the highly touted Seattle Mariners outfield prospect showed he can flash some leather too.

Playing in his second game since being promoted to Triple-A Tacoma, the 6-foot-5 Montes made a pair of highlight-reel catches in right field during the Rainiers’ 9-7 win over Las Vegas.

Both of Montes’ web gems came in the fourth inning.

On the first one, Montes charged in and made a diving catch on a shallow fly ball.

Then, with the bases loaded and two outs later in the frame, Montes chased a fly ball down the line and made a sliding catch on the dirt near the right-field corner.

Montes, who is MLB Pipeline’s No. 26 overall prospect, was promoted to Tacoma on Tuesday after showcasing his power in Triple-A Arkansas. The 21-year-old lefty slugger .234/.369/.550 with 25 home runs and a .919 OPS in 79 games with Arkansas. He’s tied for the fourth-most homers in the entire minor leagues.

At the plate, Montes is 0 for 7 with three walks in his first two games with Tacoma.

Arroyo gets first 2 hits at Tacoma

Outfield/second base prospect Michael Arroyo, who also was promoted to Tacoma this week, picked up his first two Triple-A hits while going 2 for 5 with a double and an RBI single on Wednesday.

Arroyo, MLB Pipeline’s No. 43 overall prospect, slashed .287/.364/.456 with 10 homers and an .820 OPS in 65 games with Arkansas. After a slow start, the 21-year-old Colombian native is batting .317 since the start of May.
