Highly touted M’s prospect on fire in return from torn ACL

Highly touted Seattle Mariners prospect Jonny Farmelo certainly doesn’t look like a player who’s coming off an ACL injury.

Farmelo, who recently returned from a torn ACL that he suffered last June, blasted two more home runs for High-A Everett on Friday night. He also doubled and finished 3 for 4 to continue a torrid stretch.

Since returning from injury on April 29, Farmelo is batting .281 with four homers, a triple and two doubles in seven games with Everett. The 20-year-old center fielder also made a nice sliding catch earlier this week.

Farmelo, a 2023 first-round draft pick by Seattle, is ranked by Baseball America as the No. 3 prospect in the Mariners’ farm system and the No. 57 overall prospect in the game. He’s ranked by MLB Pipeline as the No. 6 prospect in Seattle’s system and the No. 90 overall prospect in baseball.

After being drafted out of high school, the left-handed-hitting Farmelo had a strong 2024 pro debut in Low-A Modesto. In 46 games last year, he batted .264 with four homers, three triples, 10 doubles, 18 stolen bases and an .820 OPS before tearing his ACL on a play in center field.

But less than 11 months later, Farmelo is back on the diamond and showcasing his five-tool skill set in a scorching return to action.

“Really excited for Jonny,” Mariners general manager Justin Hollander said on Friday. “All the reports have been good. He has not had any postgame where he hasn’t felt good or hasn’t felt like himself. All of the things that we can measure are measuring the same way they were at this time last year before the injury. So really, really happy for the progress that he’s made, for the work he’s put in.

“It looks exactly like a bigger, stronger, faster version of the Jonny Farmelo from last year. Really pumped for him.”
