Mariners take 1st place after another strong road start from Gilbert
Logan Gilbert's third straight scoreless road outing helped the M's pass the A's for first in the AL West.

Logan Gilbert turned in another strong start on the road, and the Seattle Mariners are now atop the American League West standings for the first time this season as a result.
Gilbert struck out seven through six shutout innings to help the M’s finish off a three-game sweep in a big series with a 9-1 win on Wednesday over the Athletics, who entered the week in first place in the AL West.

The Mariners now have a 28-29 record on the season, which puts them one-half game in front of the A’s. The win also ended the Athletics’ reign of more than a month in first place in the division. The last time the A’s weren’t in first was on April 17.
Gilbert, whose 4.74 ERA on the road a year ago was more than two runs higher than at home, has now gone three straight road outings without allowing a run. During that stretch, he’s struck out 21 batters and allowed just eight hits and four walks over 17 2/3 innings.
In total, the right-hander has surrendered just three runs over 28 2/3 innings in five road starts this year. His 0.94 ERA in away games trails only Shohei Ohtani (0.75) among 124 MLB pitchers with at least 20 innings thrown on the road.
Gilbert got plenty of run support on Wednesday. Rob Refnsnyder sparked the offense with a three-run homer in the first inning, Colt Emerson added a two-run triple in the fourth, and Julio Rodríguez capped the offensive outburst with a three-run blast in the eighth – his eighth homer this month.
