Mariners’ Colt Emerson joins rare company with big day

A week after making his MLB debut, 20-year-old Seattle Mariners rookie Colt Emerson went 4 for 4 with three doubles and an RBI single in Sunday afternoon’s 8-6 loss to the Kansas City Royals.

Emerson’s big day at the plate raised his batting average to .286 after a 2-for-17 start.

It also placed him in some rare company. Here’s a closer look at what Seattle’s top prospect achieved on Sunday, according to Stathead.

• Emerson became just the 18th player in MLB history at age 20 or younger to record at least four hits in a game, with at least three of those hits being extra-base hits. He’s just the fifth player to achieve that feat in the past 50 seasons, joining Alex Rodriguez (1996), Miguel Cabrera (2003), Giancarlo Stanton (2010), Manny Machado (2013) and Roughned Odor (2014).

• Emerson joined Ken Griffey Jr. and Rodriguez as the only players in franchise history with a four-hit game at age 20 or younger. Griffey achieved the feat four times, including once at age 19. Rodriguez achieved the feat three times.

• Emerson joined Rodriguez and José López as the only Mariners with three extra-base hits in a game at age 20 or younger. Rodriguez achieved the feat four times and Lopez did so once.
