Third baseman Brendan Donovan was held out of the Seattle Mariners’ lineup on Saturday against the Los Angeles Angels with a groin issue, manager Dan Wilson told reporters pregame.

Donovan was hurt while trying to hustle out a single on a grounder in the top of the seventh inning on Friday night, which caused him to jam his right foot into the dirt. Wilson said it was the leg that did not hit the base that was giving Donovan issues. Donovan was pulled for defensive replacement Leo Rivas in the bottom of the inning.
Donovan had imaging done on his leg Saturday and the team is still assessing the situation.
Mariners insider Shannon Drayer reported Donovan was doing agility work with a trainer before Saturday’s game.
With Donovan out of the lineup, Rivas is starting at third base and hitting ninth against Angels right-hander Jack Kochanowicz. Right fielder Luke Raley moved up to Donovan’s usual spot batting leadoff against a right-handed starter.
The 29-year-old Donovan has been off to an impressive start at the plate through his first eight games with the Mariners. He’s hitting .370 (10 for 27) with two homers and two doubles, including becoming the first player in franchise history to hit a leadoff home run on opening day.
Below is a look at what the rest of the Mariners’ lineup looks like as right-hander Emerson Hancock takes the mound.
