Roster Moves: Mariners recall LHP Josh Simpson, option reliever

Right-hander Alex Hoppe was sent down to Triple-A Tacoma.

The Seattle Mariners recalled left-handed-reliever Josh Simpson from Triple-A Tacoma ahead of their matchup at the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday.

In a corresponding move, right-hander Alex Hoppe was optioned to Tacoma.

The 28-year-old Simpson appeared in three games for the Mariners earlier this season, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk while striking out three batters over 2 1/3 innings. The left-hander made his major league debut with the Miami Marlins last season and posted a 7.34 ERA and 1.83 WHIP in 30 2/3 innings over 31 games in 2025.

Simpson, who the Mariners acquired in exchange for cash in a February trade with the Marlins, has a 2.08 ERA and 1.11 WHIP with 24 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings over 20 outings with Tacoma this year.

Hoppe, 27, has a 6.38 ERA and 1.46 WHIP with 26 strikeouts in 24 innings over 21 appearances with the M’s this season. He made his major league debut on April 27.

Seattle acquired Hoppe in a November 2025 trade with the Boston Red Sox in exchange for minor league catcher Luke Heyman.
