M’s prospects focus on impressions with limited open spots in camp
With the Mariners roster already close to being set early in spring training, the biggest opportunities for young players is to make is good first or second impressions with the coaching staff.
PEORIA, Ariz. – While in the recent past there have been a number of positions open at Mariners spring training, which translates to opportunity for young players, this year the big league club is close to being set. For the young players in camp this year the biggest opportunity at hand is most likely to make a good first or second impression.
They will get looks, but the majority of the focus will be on the limited position battles and those who are expected to make the club. I asked Lloyd McClendon how he as the manager of the big league club watches these players.
“I think this is a fun time for them,” he said. “I explained to them, the purpose of a major league camp is to make sure you get your major league club ready. At some point you want to take a look at your young talent and you want to see as many reps as you can. It’s a time where they should enjoy it – there’s no pressures. ‘Enjoy your time here, listen, learn keep the mouth shut and work hard.’ I think our guys are doing that.”
It is good to see that he has had this communication with them. Sure, eyes are on them and they are being constantly evaluated, but relax. Let your talent shine through. It is not quite time to put the pressure of making the club on your shoulders.

While the battle for shortstop will be between Brad Miller and Chris Taylor, McClendon took some time to watch and chat with Ketel Marte and Shawn O’Malley. Also in this video are D.J.
