MLB hands out suspension to Mariners OF Victor Robles

Seattle Mariners outfielder Victor Robles has received a 10-game suspension for his outburst that included throwing his bat at a pitcher during a rehab game with the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers, the league announced in a release Tuesday.

The suspension must be served at the MLB level and will begin when Robles was first activated to the major league roster. However, Robles has elected to appeal the suspension, meaning the discipline will not go into effect until the appeal process has been completed.

Seattle Sports Mariners insider Shannon Drayer reported on social media that suspension appeals “typically happen soon after the player asks for the appeal.”

If Robles does have to serve his suspension, it means the Mariners will have to play a man down on their roster. However, the club could elect to have Robles return in September when rosters expand from 26 to 28 players, which includes one extra position player.

Robles’ suspension stems from an incident on Sunday. The right fielder was hit by a pitch that he swung at from Las Vegas Aviators pitcher Joey Estes. Robles chucked his bat towards the mound, began yelling towards Estes and had to be held back by teammates as he made his way towards the mound.

After being ejected from the game, Robles went to the dugout and threw a cooler full of bags of sunflower seeds onto the field.

Robles had already been hit by three pitches in just four rehab games before the incident Sunday. Estes was the first pitcher to hit Robles during his the first game of his rehab assignment last Tuesday, and he hit him on another pitch that was ruled a swing earlier in Sunday’s game. Estes also hit Robles during a major league game last season.

Robles apologized Sunday night for the incident, citing the frustrations of the situation, his lengthy time on the injury list and recent death of his mother.

Robles has missed most of this year with a dislocation and fracture in his shoulder suffered in early April. He began the year as the Mariners’ starting right fielder and leadoff hitter.

After being acquired midseason in 2024, he slashed .328/.393/.467 for an .860 OPS with 30 steals and 3.1 fWAR in 77 games with Seattle. The club rewarded the former highly ranked prospect with a two-year, $9.75 million contract extension that keeps him with the club through 2026.
