Mariners-Yankees series opener suspended by rain in 5th inning

Update (5:51 p.m.): The Seattle Mariners and New York Yankees resumed play at 5:50 p.m. PT after a delay of roughly 35 minutes.

The Seattle Mariners and New York Yankees went into a rain delay Tuesday during the fifth inning of the opening game of their three-game series at Yankee Stadium.

The game was tied 0-0 with runners on first and third and two outs in the top of the fifth. Mariners shortstop J.P. Crawford was at the plate in a 2-1 a count when the delay went into effect.

According to The Weather Channel, a sever thunderstorm watch is in effect in the area. Thunderstorms are expected to persist until about 10 p.m. local time (7 p.m. PT) when the chances of rain drop to 15%.

The delay came with Mariners starter Logan Gilbert and Yankees starter Will Warren locked in a pitcher’s duel. Gilbert had allowed only one hit and struck out four on 51 pitches through four innings. Warren had allowed four hits and struck out four over 4 2/3 innings. Depending on the length of the delay, both starters’ days could be over.

For an MLB game to be considered official, it must go at least five innings, or the road team must have recorded 15 outs if the home team is leading.

If the game is not resumed Tuesday night, it will pick up where it left off at later date.

Thunderstorms are also in the forecast for the series finale between the Mariners and Yankees on Thursday.
