Mariners trade Luis Sardinas to Padres for PTBNL

The Mariners have traded infielder Luis Sardinas to the Padres for a player to be named later or cash considerations. Sardinas was designated for assignment Aug. 10.

Acquired from the Brewers last winter in exchange for outfielder Ramon Flores, Sardinas broke camp with the Mariners this spring and hit .151/.203/.254/.467 in 32 games over three stints with the big-league club.

He began the season as the No. 1 defensive backup to Ketel Marte at shortstop but eventually lost that spot to Shawn O’Malley, who has proven he can do more with the bat and has better positional flexibility.

The acquisition of utility player Mike Freeman shortly after the trade deadline bumped Sardinas even further down the depth chart, and when a roster spot was needed to add a pitcher after the Mariners’ 15-inning game on Aug. 9 he was designated for assignment.
