Mariners slug three HRs en route to series win over White Sox

The Seattle Mariners used the longball to escape Chicago with yet another series win on the road.

The M’s clubbed three home runs, including Leody Taveras’ decisive two-run blast in the eighth inning, on their way to beating the White Sox 6-5 on Wednesday at Rate Field. All six of Seattle’s runs came via the home run.

The Mariners improved to 28-20 and pushed their AL West lead over the Houston Astros to three games. They also won their seventh straight series on the road.

Julio Rodríguez kicked off the power surge in the first with his second home run of the series. After back-to-back walks from J.P. Crawford and Jorge Polanco to start the game, the M’s center fielder got a hold of a center-cut fastball from Chicago starter Shane Smith and redirected it over the wall in right-center field for a 3-0 lead. 

The home run was Rodríguez’s ninth this season and fifth this month, which is one shy of his previous career best in May. He also hit a grand slam during the series opener in Chicago on Monday. 

The White Sox used three homers of their own to take a 4-3 lead, but Cal Raleigh answered back with a game-tying solo shot in the fifth off White Sox reliever Brandon Eisert.

Hitting from the right side, Raleigh yanked a changeup that was just off the plate away into the bullpen in left field for his 16th home run of the season. With the blast, Raleigh tied Aaron Judge for the American League home run lead and moved one behind Shohei Ohtani and Kyle Schwarber for the MLB lead.

Taveras, who was claimed off  waivers from the Texas Rangers on May 6, capped the big day for the M’s bats with his first home run in a Seattle uniform.

The switch-hitting right fielder tagged a changeup from White Sox right-hander Mike Vasil 391 feet for a two-run shot into the stands in right-center field. It was Taveras’ second home run of the season and first since April 24.

Casey Legumina (4-1) picked up the win after allowing one unearned run in the seventh inning. Andrés Muñoz closed the door in the ninth inning for his MLB-best 16th save.

Mariners starter Logan Evans delivered his second straight six-inning outing. He struck out seven and allowed four runs on six hits and one walk.

Vasil (2-2) took the loss.
