Mariners Prospect Watch: Who has caught Servais’ eye this offseason?

When Mariners manager Scott Servais talked to the media on Wednesday, it was only a matter of time before the discussion turned to the players in the rebuilding team’s farm system.

Servais was prepared, as he shared which players he saw in Arizona during instructional/development league play this fall stood out to him.

Here’s what he had to say about three standouts.

• Taylor Trammell, OF, 23 years old, No. 5 M’s prospect

“I was really impressed about his maturity, how he goes about his at-bats, what he looks like running around the outfield. I definitely think there is a major league player in there. When, I’m not sure, but there’s a major league player in there, there’s no question about that.”

• Noelvi Marte, SS, 19 years old, No. 7 M’s prospect

“To see his development and how he’s progressed is very encouraging.”

• Julio Rodríguez, OF, 19 years old, No. 2 M’s prospect

“I thought Julio played fantastic down there. Completely healthy, had actually trimmed down a little bit. Was running better than I had ever seen before. Obviously hits the ball very hard and the personality and all of the things you are looking for there.”

Updates on Logan Gilbert and Jarred Kelenic

When will we see Gilbert and Kelenic?

Gilbert, the Mariners’ No. 4 prospect on MLB Pipeline, and Kelenic, who owns the top spot, are very different cases. The 23-year-old Gilbert was Seattle’s top pick in 2018 and I would suspect he’s on the near-horizon heading into 2021, while the 21-year-old Kelenic still has just 93 plate appearances above A-ball. The answer to the question for both, though, would seem to be when they show they are ready.

In the meantime, Servais revealed that the Mariners have been keeping the duo involved in what they are doing as an organization moving forward.

“Whether it is the calls in the wintertime and keeping them up to speed, even though they haven’t touched the big leagues yet, we all know they are going to be a big part of what we are doing here moving forward,” he said.
