PEORIA, Ariz. – The Mariners announced two roster moves before the first game of their split-squad, day-night doubleheader of sorts on Friday.

The team has optioned outfielder Boog Powell and right-handed pitcher Chase De Jong to Triple-A Tacoma.

Powell, who has five days remaining to serve on his 80-game suspension for a positive PED test, has put up good numbers this spring, hitting .577 in 26 at-bats with two walks and no strikeouts. He spent his winter playing in the Dominican League, working on a new approach at the plate and trying to get back games lost to the suspension. He will need to be added back to the 40-man roster once he has sat out the full 80 games.

De Jong, acquired from the Dodgers on March 1 in exchange for two minor leaguers, pitched in three games for the Mariners this spring, allowing five earned runs in nine innings. The Texas League Pitcher of the Year last year, De Jong will join the Tacoma rotation.

With the moves, the Mariners spring training roster is now at 51 with 35 roster players and 16 non-roster invitees.
