Mariners notebook: Robinson Cano day-to-day with abdominal strain, will get MRI

With the Mariners playing a day game after the night game, it wasn’t too out of the ordinary to see Robinson Cano out of the lineup. It turns out, however, his absence isn’t a scheduled day off. Before Wednesday’s game, manager Lloyd McClendon told the media that Cano was out of the lineup with an abdominal strain and that the doctors would take a closer look at it.

“He was trying to make a play a couple of days ago and he felt it,” McClendon said. “It’s got a little worse, so as a precaution we will take an MRI today and wait on the doctors’ results and go from there. Right now he is day-to-day.”

Cano felt something in his lower abdomen on a play he made in the field on Monday. He stayed in the game and insisted he was fine on Tuesday. He did, however, feel something as he ran. As a result, doctors will take a closer look during Wednesday’s game.

“Robbie is stubborn,” McClendon said of holding Cano out of the lineup. “His pain tolerance is so high he actually wanted to play again today but the doctors said we need to get this looked at and make sure that there’s nothing going on. If this was the seventh game of the World Series, Robbie could play and would want to play. But it is just the right thing to do.”

As of Wednesday morning it was expected that Cano would travel with the team to Minnesota following the game.

Notes

• Charlie Furbush reported no problems after his first bullpen session since going on the disabled list. He will travel with the team to Minnesota, throw another bullpen and then if all goes well he should get an inning or two in Tacoma Aug. 6 or 7.

• James Paxton is showing progress with his throwing. He still has to tape his injured finger but is using less tape. Once he is able to throw pain-free, tape-free, he will be allowed to throw from the mound.
