PEORIA, Ariz. – From the “you have got to be kidding me” files, Marco Gonzales was hit on his right hand by a laser shot off the bat of Leury Garcia in the second inning of the Mariners’ 4-2 loss to the White Sox Monday night.

Gonzales immediately left the game and headed to the clubhouse with a trainer. Soon after it was announced Gonzales suffered a right hand contusion. About an hour later in the clubhouse, with his right hand heavily wrapped, the Mariners lefty told reporters he didn’t believe the injury was serious.

“Initial scans look OK,” Gonzales said. “We are going to re-evaluate more tomorrow, but as of now I think I am going to be alright.”

The ball hit Gonzales on the base of the thumb, right below the glove on a ball he said he didn’t see. Gonzales’ glove was knocked off, he halted, then found the ball and threw to first before turning to the dugout to motion for the trainers.

“Thankfully it’s the right hand I got hit on,” he said. “I’m thankful it was that hand.”

The game got off to a rocky start for Gonzales as the first pitch he threw was deposited over the left-center wall. The solo shot off the bat leadoff hitter Adam Engel was the first run Gonzales had given up this spring. He surrendered one more before he got out of the inning leaving the bases loaded.

“To be completely honest I think the leadoff guy kind of threw me off my game,” he said. “I honestly felt a lot better in the second inning, but I guess it just wasn’t my night.”

Entering the game, Gonzales had thrown nine scoreless innings in three starts this spring for the Mariners.
