SEATTLE – Bryce Miller is closing in on a rehab assignment and Victor Robles could return to the Seattle Mariners’ lineup before the season ends.

Seattle Sports Mariners insider Shannon Drayer reported Thursday night that Miller could make his first rehab appearance since going on the injured list as soon as Friday with a target of about 55 pitches.

Dipoto: Seattle Mariners ‘notably better’ after big trade deadline

President of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto also shared the latest on Miller and Robles before Seattle’s series opener against the Texas Rangers.

“I think right now he’s loosely scheduled for tomorrow,” Dipoto said of Miller. “I’ve been a little underground the last two days (due to the trade deadline), but he’s on target. We’re going to build his pitch count. It’s going well so far. We don’t really have a (date) on his return, but we’ll build the pitch count as opposed to some of what we’ve done through his last time (on the IL).”

Miller, who is expected to return to the majors at some point in August, has been on the injured list since June 10 with inflammation and a bone spur in his right elbow, the same issue that landed him on the IL earlier this season. Miller missed just under three weeks with the issue in May but made his return to majors without making a rehab appearance. On July 19, he threw his first live batting practice since going on the IL for the second time.

After posting a 12-8 record and 2.94 ERA during a breakout 2024 campaign, Miller is 2-5 with a 5.73 ERA in 48 2/3 innings over 10 starts this season.

Robles has been out since early April after he fractured his humeral head and dislocated his shoulder making a highlight-reel grab crashing into the netting in foul territory at Oracle Park in San Francisco. The right fielder took batting practice for the first time since the injury on Wednesday when the Mariners were in West Sacramento, California, playing the Athletics.

Robles told reporters Wednesday that he has been throwing from up to 150 feet, taking two-handed swings since last week and is feeling about 80%.

“I feel really good. I think I feel good when it comes to swinging, fielding,” Robles told reporters Wednesday. “We haven’t gotten to the point of diving and sliding, which is I think the next concern.

Dipoto said Robles could end up making his return in September, but any setback between now and then would likely end his season. The club was even looking for insurance options for Robles at the trade deadline.

“We actually were fairly active in the last 48 hours in trying to find maybe more of an optionable, right-handed-hitting outfielder who might be able to take the role for a little bit,” Dipoto said. “We weren’t able to drive that home. And then low and behold, in the last two days we were informed that if all goes well, Vic has the potential of getting on our roster at some point in September, maybe more early than late.

“Obviously we don’t have the ability to get through any setback, there’s not enough time left on the calendar. But right now he’s working his tail off. It’s trending in the right direction.”
