Mariners Hot Stove Show: Kyle Lewis, a look at the farm and more

As we get ever closer to Mariners pitchers and catchers reporting to Peoria for spring training, another Mariners Hot Stove Show is in the books. Two hours of baseball talk hosted by Rick Rizzs, Gary Hill and yours truly took over the airwaves at 710 ESPN Seattle on Tuesday night, and if you missed it, well, as always, we have a podcast.

Mariners’ Marco Gonzales speaks candidly about Astros’ cheating

Hour 1 kicked off with a visit from Mariners outfielder Kyle Lewis, who joined us from his home in Atlanta. Lewis has had a nice balance of work, rest and play this winter, and he filled us in on how he and his teammates keep in touch out of season. He reflected on his first taste of the big leagues, talked about is very detailed offseason routine and dished about the sneakerheads on team.

Mariners director of player development Andy McKay followed and gave insight into how they will go about getting minor leaguers ready for the big leagues in 2020, when the Mariners know they are ready (which includes an interesting aside about Jarred Kelenic), and what they can learn from observing those who advanced to the bigs in 2019 that can help them moving forward.

Oakland Athletics broadcaster Chris Townsend was our last guest and he gave us a good look at what we could see from the A’s this year. Hint, it doesn’t sound like they are taking any kind of step back after their 97-win 2019 season. Townsend also had the latest on the A’s stadium situation and pointed to a key reason why it appears this finally will get done and when we could see the team in a new home.

The show also featured an interview Aaron Goldsmith had with pitcher Justin Dunn and highlights from the Mariners’ pre-spring training press conference.
