Mariners fall to Guardians 6-4 on opening day

SEATTLE – Perhaps the most anticipated season in the history of the Seattle Mariners started with a narrow home loss.

José Ramírez hit a tiebreaking, two-run double off Gabe Speier in the top of the seventh inning and the Guardians beat the Mariners 6-4 on opening day Thursday at T-Mobile Park.

Ramírez’s double came with two outs on a slider below the zone and put Cleveland up 5-3. It plated rookie Chase DeLauter and Bryan Rocchio, who both reached base on singles.

DeLauter added a solo home run in the ninth, his second of the day during a standout regular season big league debut. He first appeared for Cleveland in the playoffs last season.

Seattle’s Dominic Canzone hit two solo home runs, including one that cut the Guardians’ lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh, and Brendan Donovan and Luke Raley each added a solo homers of their own for the Mariners.

Mariners starter Logan Gilbert allowed three runs on five hits and struck out seven over 5 1/3 innings.

DeLauter hit a solo homer in his first at-bat in the first inning, and Rocchio had a two-run double in the fifth for Cleveland.

Guardians starter Tanner Bibee surrendered three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out seven over five innings. The right-hander came out to pitch the sixth inning, but appeared to be in discomfort after throwing his final warm-up pitch and left the game after being checked on by manager Stephen Vogt and a team trainer.

Connor Brogdon pitched a scoreless sixth to earn the win on the mound, and Cade Smith pitched a perfect ninth to record the save.
