Mariners’ Bryan Woo makes it clear he should be an All-Star

Seattle Mariners starter Bryan Woo put the final stamp on his All-Star case Friday afternoon.

Which top Seattle Mariners prospects are their best trade chips?

Woo was dominate as he struck out eight over six shutout innings in the Mariners’ 6-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on the Fourth of July, rattling off his 17th consecutive start of at least six innings to start the season. That’s the most starts of at least six innings of any MLB pitcher this year, and he’s only one shy of Félix Hernández’s single-season franchise record of consecutive starts of at least six innings set in 2014.

Woo’s stellar outing also put him in elite company for big league pitchers this season. He joined reigning AL Cy Young winner and former Seattle U standout Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers as the only MLB pitchers with a sub-3.00 ERA, 100 or more strikeouts and fewer than 20 walks this season.

Woo, a former sixth-round draft pick, has been the stabilizing force for a Mariners rotation that has been hammered by injuries throughout the year. The right-hander has an 8-4 record with a 2.77 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 104 strikeouts over 107 1/3 innings pitched. In his 17 starts, the M’s are 10-7.

With Logan Gilbert, George Kirby and Bryce Miller all dealing with injuries at some point, Woo leads the club in wins, innings pitched, quality starts and strikeouts. He’s also first among Seattle starters in ERA and WHIP.

His numbers compare favorably with the rest of the American League as well. The several stats he ranks among the top 10 in the AL include wins, ERA, WHIP quality starts, innings pitched and fWAR.

It should all be enough to get Woo to his first All-Star Game, but he and the M’s won’t find out until Sunday at 2 p.m. when pitchers and reserves are announced during the unveiling of full All-Star rosters on ESPN.
