Mariners acquire Mark Trumbo, Vidal Nuno in trade with D-Backs

With the Mariners’ offense struggling, general manager Jack Zduriencik has made a move.

On Wednesday afternoon he finalized a trade with the Diamondbacks that will bring slugger Mark Trumbo and left-hander Vidal Nuno to Seattle in exchange for catcher Welington Castillo, reliever Dominic Leone and minor leaguers Gabby Guerrero and Jack Reinheimer.

“We’ve always liked Mark Trumbo,” Zduriencik said shortly after the announcement. “We know his capabilities. He’s a big power guy and we thought at this moment, our offense is sputtering, making our lineup deeper with someone who has track record of 30 home runs, someone who is familiar with the division, he’s 29 years of age, he can play left field, right field, first base, DH, we thought it was the right thing to do, to add and not wait.”

While Zduriencik has had ongoing conversations with many clubs, this deal came about in the last four days. Talks most likely heated up after the Diamondbacks lost catcher Tuffy Gosewich for the year with with a torn ACL earlier in the week.

In Castillo, the Mariners had a backup catcher with every-day experience, which was attractive to the Diamondbacks. While the Mariners liked Castillo, they had a replacement ready to go in Jesus Sucre.

Nuno, who has options and five years of club control remaining, will go straight to the bullpen. Has both started and relieved and gives the bullpen an arm that can go extended innings.

“He’s a tough kid, throws strikes, not afraid to come at you,” Zduriencik said. “I think he has a little more flexibility than what we had.”

Trumbo can play both corner outfield positions, DH and back up first base. They will have no problem finding a spot for his bat which should help add a little punch to an offense that has averaged just 2.5 runs per game on the current home stand. With Nuno going to the pen and another catcher coming up, an additional roster move will have to be made before the game Thursday.
